Class: The Mathematics of Knitting
Class: The Mathematics of Knitting
If you have ever been in the situation where the perfect yarn and perfect pattern do not match up, you won't want to miss this class! Join retired mathematics professor Dr. Bonita Lawrence in exploring the relationships between stitch count, gauge, yarn weight, and more.
We will take the frida pattern by Emilie Luis, written for a fingering and lace weight yarn held together, and convert it to use a worsted weight yarn. Gauge is not critical for this project.
Materials needed for this class include:
- US 8 (5mm) knitting needles (or size needed for gauge)
-
scissors
- a tapestry needle
- a tape measure
Cost of the class includes:
- Pattern
- Yarn (1 skein of Juniper Moon Farms Fourteen Paints - your choice of color)
Recommended skills needed before attempting this class:
- Understanding how to cast on, knowing how to knit and purl stitches.
- How to read a pattern.
We are hopeful you'll learn the following new techniques in the class:
- Calculating stitches per inch based on yarn weight.
- How to convert patterns to utilize your desired yarn weight and not the pattern's given weight.
- The Double Knit stitch.
- Seaming.
